Why BMO is a member of UNEP FI
BMO joined UNEP FI in 1993 to engage with stakeholders and peers on developments in sustainable banking and finance. We see value in collaborating to share best practices and grow sustainable financial markets in a way that supports a stable economy, environment and society. Through our membership, we have the opportunity to learn from others as well as to shape the future of our industry.
Sustainability Strategy /Sustainable Finance Strategy
BMO is dedicated to pursuing growth in a responsible and sustainable manner. We understand that our bank has an important role to play in convening people around important causes, in acting as a catalyst for meaningful action, and in empowering change that sustains growth and enhances social good. Our sustainability strategy is embodied through our Sustainability Principles of social change, financial resilience, community building and environmental responsibility. These Principles sit alongside our strategic priorities and are inextricably linked to our financial performance. They are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and guide us as we seek to offer our clients innovative sustainable finance solutions to fund activities that have positive environmental and social impacts.
We report on our economic, social and environmental performance based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and are integrating disclosures that align with international standards including those of the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB). BMO was one of the first banks globally to support the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) and we are taking steps to assess and report on the climate-related risks and opportunities in line with that framework. We are dedicated to supporting our clients in navigating the transition to a lower carbon economy and in working together to increase the positive impacts on people and the environment resulting from our activities, products and services.
We are proud to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index, the FTSE4Good Index and the STOXX Global ESG Leaders Index. In 2019, we were named by the Ethisphere Institute as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. BMO was the only Canadian bank and one of only five banks worldwide to be named to the list.
