The UNEP 2022 Emissions Gap Report highlighted the urgency of halving global emissions by 2030, to get on the pathway of net zero emissions by mid-century. Heavy industries and emerging economies are central to this challenge, where innovative decarbonization solutions are yet to be developed or deployed at scale.
Evidence from recent analyses, such as the Net Zero Industry Tracker 2022 (published by World Economic Forum (WEF) in collaboration with Accenture) and the Cost of Capital Observatory (hosted by the International Energy Agency) highlight respectively what is missing in creating an enabling environment for accelerated industrial decarbonisation and for scaling investment in energy transition in emerging economies.
In this COP27 side event – co-organised by UNEP FI, IEA, and WEF – leaders from public and private sectors will discuss opportunities to accelerate progress towards net zero in both hard-to-abate industries and emerging economies.
In particular, the speakers will identify solutions for transparency-building (which would inform policymakers’, investors’, and industries’ decision-making) and for navigating the uncertainties for hard-to-abate industries and emerging economies.
