Press Release

,19 July | London, UK On 19 July, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative launched a new Investor Briefing that explains why and how institutional investors should start measuring, disclosing and reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with their investments and investment portfolios. The launch event was generously hosted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London. The Briefing argues that carbon footprinting is one of several key tools that investors should use to understand, assess and mitigate portfolio carbon risk, identifies existing best practice on how investors can achieve this and lays the foundations for the development of a new market standard to measure and report financed emissions. The launch event featured opening remarks from Abyd Karmali, Global Head of Carbon Markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and a presentation of the Briefing by Nick Robins, Head, Climate Change Centre, HSBC. The presentation was followed by two panel discussions focused on the role of institutional investors and financial institutions, i.e., the financial sector, in decarbonising the global economy. The first panel focused on two questions: “What role can and should (institutional) investors play in the transition to a low-carbon global economy,” and, “What is the value and potential of the concepts of ‘carbon accounting and reporting’ by investors and ‘portfolio decarbonisation’”? The panel was moderated by Leon Kamhi, Managing Director, Hermes Equity Ownership Services, and the panellists were:

  • Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive, Share Action
  • James Hulse, Head of Forests & Head of Investor Initiatives, CDP
  • Pieter van Stijn, Senior Advisor RI, and Climate and Energy Expert, PGGM
  • Claire Tutenuit, Délégué Général, Entreprises pour l’Environnement

The second panel focused on the question, “What conditions need to be in place so that institutional investors can achieve their full potential in aiding the transition to a low-carbon global economy?” The panel was moderated by David Pitt-Watson, Senior Strategic Advisor, Inflection Point Capital Management and co-chair of UNEP FI. The panelists were:

  • Cynthia Cummis, Deputy Director, Greenhouse Gas Protocol
  • Valéry Lucas-Leclin, Director, Thematic Investment, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
  • Ulf Moslener, Head of Research, Frankfurt School of Finance, UNEP Collaborating Centre
  • Raj Thamotheram, Strategic Advisor, Raj Thamotheram Associates

Closing remarks were given by David Pitt-Watson.,,Event Details Friday, 19 July 2013 at 3 pm – 6 pm (Reception to follow) King Edward Hall
