Nature at UNEP FI
UNEP FI has been working on nature and biodiversity in finance for over 30 years, driving momentum with the financial community on this critical topic. Some milestones on the journey were the launch of the Natural Capital Declaration at the Rio+20 conference in 2012, and the formation of the Natural Capital Financial Alliance with Global Canopy, a 50-strong Alliance foundational to the nature-positive finance movement. Key projects included the development of the online ENCORE tool which continues to be built out and be actively used by financial institutions and central banks today, and features a module specific to biodiversity impact in mining and agriculture.
UNEP FI continues to produce leading guidance and reports on Nature, driving innovation and working with the financial community to develop the frameworks, practical solutions and pathways required to better understand risks, pursue opportunities, and establish the foundation for sustainable long-term economic growth.
In recent years UNEP FI has formalised collaborations with leading partners including the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat, the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation and Pledge, the Coalition for Private Finance in Conservation, the Science-based Targets Network, Global Canopy and the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, working to promote market-wide coherence.
UNEP FI has also concretely strengthened the engagement of finance in the development of the Global Biodiversity Framework, a landmark decade-long strategy for society to turn the tide of nature loss by 2030, demonstrating how private leadership can improve global policy.
