Creating the Principles
The Principles for Responsible Banking are the result of a unique and extensive process of consultation. The 30 founding signatory banks developed the Principles on behalf of and in consultation with UNEP FI’s member banks. They were advised by a group of 12 civil society institutions and a global public consultation involving 250 banks and more than 500 stakeholders, including civil society, regulators and investors from around the world. Find out more about the people who developed the Principles.
Making Progress
The Principles were officially launched at the UN General Assembly by 130 founding banks and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the 22 and 23 September 2019. Since launch, the number of signatory banks has rapidly grown. Banks across the world continue to work closely together, convened by the UN, to develop industry-wide guidance, cutting-edge commitments, pioneering tools and peer-learning to support their own journeys to implement the Principles.
